Latin. For the purpose of investigating of the truth. Although as a general rule writings cannot be cut down or explained by parole testimony, yet in some cases, on the principle of the phrase such testimony is admitted. A deed may be reduced on the parol testimony of the testamentary witnesses, if they swear that they were not present at the subscription, and did not hear the signature acknowledged; a decree on a bill or bond may be refused, if it can be proved that the document of debt was obtained through fraud; and parole testimony is admitted, to remove any doubt which may arise from latent ambiguity in a deed.
